WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

# 1. Post a blog 3 times a week (M, W & F) of at least 200 words. In your blogs you could:
-describe something you learned
-explain something that surprised you
-give an update about stuff you're working on
-explain how you solved a problem
-tell a cool story

Also include images, sounds or video from your project.

# 2. Respond thoughtfully to another blogger's posts on this site. Post 1 of these response-blogs per week (200 or more words each).

Each of you is expected to contribute to this blog--even if you're working with another student or with a group.

I'm really looking forward to following your project via your postings! Have fun!

A West Side Story

May 14th, 2014
Esperanza: (Official) Day 1

I started the day a little nervous, wondering what was in store for Emeline, Rebekah and me. Tuesday afternoon we had gone in to introduce ourselves to the staff, learn our way around the office and do a little planning with our sponsor, Marcia. She had been a little unsure of whether she could find things for us to do that were both helpful and interesting. While we had planned to stay there all of Tuesday afternoon to start working, she only had one short task for us, so after writing a Facebook post for their page we went back to the library. Needless to say, when we arrived Wednesday at 10 I was concerned there wouldn't be much for us to do, but I was pleasantly surprised. While Rebekah and Emeline made calls to potential volunteers, I set to work making a Prezi presentation for their upcoming Volunteer Appreciation event. I used several excel sheets to show the amount of work volunteers had put in in the past year, and added pictures of various important events. Coincidentally, Emeline and Rebekah finished up just as I was logging off of the computer. We then helped the volunteer coordinator, Adria, by finishing up the pieces for a game for the event called "Famous Duos." This involved us thinking of famous pairs, such as salt and pepper or beauty and the beast, then printing and cutting out the pictures and taping them into cards. Once we finished Emeline had to leave to go to a Softball game and there was nothing else for us to do, so Rebekah and I walked across the street to work on our project.

Our project is going really well, and I'm much more excited about it now then I was when we started the proposal. On Monday and Tuesday we made our list of places, services and events to include in our guidebook and started contacting places for permission to feature them, interviews and pictures. Today, after Emeline left, Rebekah and I organized the layout of the booklet and found a printer (with 2 discounts!) I'm really surprised at how much work this is going to be and at how fast it's going.

Overall the past three days I've been really satisfied with our work. I feel really productive and like I'm really making a difference. Adria, who we've worked with the most so far, told us that we've already been incredibly helpful. I'm so glad to be here and to be able to work with such kind people at such a fantastic organization!
